ARCHITECT@WORK ANNOUNCES LINE UP OF TOP-TIER ARCHITECTURAL AND DESIGN EXPERTS SPEAKING

Truman Brewery, London - 22nd and 23rd March 2023

Energy and Ecosystems is the theme for this year’s ARCHITECT@WORK 2023, which is expected to spark lively and very timely conversations at the talks area of this annual event designed for the architectural community. The keynote discussion will be with Groupwork founder Amin Taha and the final talks slot has been given over to popular Negroni Talks.

Wednesday 22nd March

Positive about energy saving

The energy our buildings consume (or operational carbon to the initiated) is one of the big challenges facing architects, designers and developers. Tenants want to work in a green building and new regulations are all shifting towards more efficient places to live, work and relax in. How do we manage this from the concept and financing, through to the landscape and lighting?

15:00 – 15:45. Chair: Helen Parton

Speakers:

  • Gary Thornton, Nulty+
  • Sophie Werren, The Office Group
  • Kiru Balson, Max Fordham

Making the most of waste

Decisions about small things can have a big impact as you reach critical mass. How are we fitting out our spaces with materials that make the most of waste? And what does this mean for aesthetics?

16:15 – 17:00 Chair: Debika Ray

Speakers:

  • Catrina Stewart, Office S&M
  • Callie Tedder Hares, Volume
  • Anna Burles, Run for the Hills
  • Debbie Whitfield, Fabrix

A retrofit revolution: Keynote

It is now well established that keeping our existing building stock and repurposing it is one of the best things we can do for the environment. This retrofit revolution has not gone unnoticed and it is the cornerstone of campaigns and it is being debated in parliament. Re-use author Dr Ruth Lang talks to Amin Taha about the journey to a future built on the past.

17:30 – 18:15 Chair: Dr Ruth Lang in conversation with Amin Taha, Groupwork

Thursday 23rd March

Earth Building: what can the planet provide?

The ancient history of architecture takes us back to buildings made of straw, timber and stone. Funnily enough, it looks like a brighter and more sustainable path might be tread if we return to our roots. That’s not to say the process is simple. We will need research and clever engineering if we’re going to pull off the feat of creating a new built environment using the materials supplied by Mother Earth.

15:00 – 15:45 Chair: Vanessa Norwood

Speakers:

  • Steve Webb, Webb Yates
  • Andrew Waugh, Waugh Thistleton
  • Laura Keay, New Makers Bureau

Creating climate equity

Historically, places and spaces have been commissioned from an extremely homogenous perspective. We now appreciate that the key to making better environments for all is through inclusivity and diversity. By listening to a broader spectrum of opinions, we can create buildings and landscapes that work better for different communities. We might just find the solutions to many of our problems start with social infrastructure.

16:15 – 17:00 Chair: Marsha Ramroop

Speakers:

  • Shiro Muchiri, SoShiro
  • Pedro Gil, Studio Gil
  • Julia Skeete, SOM

Negroni Talk: net zero – fact or fallacy?

Many people are chucking around the concept of net zero and it seems to be the major target for our country in the near future, but what does it mean? With carbon offsetting taking place abroad, there is a lot of debate raging about the ethical and practical implications of net zero. However, it is the driving force behind our attempts to tackle the climate emergency. Is it too late to change course?

17:30 – 18:15. Chair: George Morgan

Speakers:

  • John Fashanu, Dash Studio
  • Tara Gbolade, Gbolade Studio
  • Matt Bell, Heatherwick Studio

Negroni Talks: Created in 2018, hosted by architects Fourthspace and sponsored by Campari – set-up to replicate the lively and provocative debates that took place in the European café culture of the early twentieth century.
