A major new public artwork by Alex Chinneck, commissioned by the festival. Entitled ‘A Week At The Knees’, the 5m tall sculpture champions British manufacturing and is made up of:
- 7,000 premium bricks by Michelmersh, precision cut by FabSpeed
- 7 bespoke, recycled steel windows - 4 with bending frames - provided by Crittall Windows
- 4.6 tonnes/320metres of repurposed steel (from the former American Embassy in Mayfair) provided by Cleveland Steel

What: Tall Arches made of British stone bricks reflecting Clerkenwell’s ancient stone history
Time: 08:15
Where: 43 Clerkenwell Green (outside the Crown Tavern) EC1R 0EG
Who: Architects Magdalena Pelszyk and Candela Oliva of Hawkins\Brown, and Steve Webb from Webb Yates Engineers will be onsite and available for questions
An impressive and elegant pair of 4m tall arches made from British limestone and sandstone. ‘Arch Revival’ serves as a modern reminder of the strength, sustainability and beauty of architectural stone, in its newest form: stone bricks by Albion Stone and Hutton Stone. Key info:
- 702 stone bricks used in each arch, half of them ‘specials’ (bespoke shapes)
- 5.2 tonnes of stone bricks from Berwick Up on Tweed, Northumberland and Portland, Dorset
- Expertise engineering by Webb Yates mean that despite their weight and towering height of 4m, the arches are only one-brick thin
- By using these stone bricks instead of clay fired bricks the CO2 is reduced by 66%
- Different coloured stone and some bespoke shaped bricks have been incorporated in the design to create a surface pattern

What: A 3D-printed glowing installation reminiscent of waves by architect Arthur Mamou-Mani
Time: 08:30
Where: St John’s Gate, 26 St John's Lane, EC1M 4BU
Who: Architect will be onsite and available for questions
Harmonic Tides, a glowing corridor at the historic St John’s Gate, formed from 3D-printed walls reminiscent of waves. Each structure features a ripple-like geometry, informed by the hydrodynamic forms found in nature, such as river eddies and spiral ocean currents. The structure is made using sugar-based PLA, an industrially compostable bioplastic. LED lights and gentle music enhance the sense of an underwater world to create a relaxing space for visitors to spend time in.

ABOUT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK
Clerkenwell Design Week returns to London’s EC1 from 20 – 22 May 2025, marking its largest and most dynamic edition to date. With over 15 exhibition venues and 160 local design showrooms, the event promises an immersive experience featuring product launches, installations, exhibitions, talks and workshops. This year’s event sees the introduction of three new exhibition venues. Among them are the historic medieval and Tudor buildings of The Charterhouse and Charterhouse Square, which will host artist Alex Chinneck’s major new public artwork; the capital’s oldest parish church, St Bartholomew the Great; and Studio Smithfield, a Grade II* listed building above the iconic Smithfield Market in the heart of the Culture Mile.
